This is the Goal of Setting Flores as Geothermal Island

Jakarta, – The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ignatius Jonan, endorsed Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 2268 K / 30 / MEM / 2017 on the Establishment of Flores Island as Geothermal Island on June 19, 2017. The purpose of this determination is to optimize the use of geothermal energy on the Island Flores both as a source of electricity and non-electric energy sources.

One of the targets to achieve is to use geothermal energy as the main source of basic electrical energy (baseload) on the island. This Decree is supported by the formation of Flores Island road map as a geothermal island.

The compilation of this roadmap is one of the results of the cooperation between the Indonesian government and the UK government as stated in the Memorandum of Understanding between the ESD ministry and the United Kingdom Department of Energy and Climate Change on Geothermal Strategic Studies Cooperation signed on August 19, 2015 between the Minister ESDM and the British Ambassador. The arrangement of this road map is done by ARUP which is an international consultant from the UK and supported by World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) – Indonesia

Director General of EBTKE, Rida Mulyana conveyed that one of the basic determination of Flores island in East Nusa Tenggara as geothermal island is because the island has a big geothermal energy potential and expected to increase the electrification ratio in eastern Indonesia. The island has 902 MW geothermal potential or 65% of geothermal potential in East Nusa Tenggara province and spread over 16 potential points ie Waisano, Ulumbu, Wai Pesi, Gou-Inelika, Mengeruda, Mataloko, Komandaru, Ndetusoko, Sokoria , Jopu, lesugolo, Oka Ile Ange, Atedai, Bukapiting, Roma-Ujelewung and Oyang Barang. Until now, Ulumbu and Mataloko have been utilized for power plants with total installed capacity of 12.5 MW, “said Rida.

Rida Mulyana added that the determination of Flores Island as a geothermal island is targeted to fulfill the basic need for baseload on the island from geothermal energy by 2025.

Director of Geothermal, Yunus Saefulhak added that geothermal development in Flores can be integrated with the downstream sector such as cement, smelter, fishery, plantation and tourism industries so that the huge potential can be maximized considering the electricity demand in Flores Island for household consumption only It is necessary cross-sectoral coordination to increase investment on the island of Flores.

Going forward, the government will prioritize the use of Geothermal Fund to explore more details of geothermal potential in Flores Island “. Flores Island has the potential of natural resources in the form of plantation, fishery and mining products and tourism sector which can be managed by utilizing geothermal energy. As the real implementation of this program is Waisano has been designated as the first location of exploration drilling program by the government. This program is a collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Finance, which is implemented by PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (PT SMI) and funded by a grant from the World Bank.
